SSW Civil Construction

What is Civil Construction (SSW)?

Civil construction within Japan's Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program refers to work that includes building and maintaining infrastructure such as roads, bridges, dams, clean water systems, and residential or commercial buildings. This sector is crucial because it supports Japan's development and its resilience against disasters.

  • Work insurance protection provided (subject to company policy)
  • Dormitory or housing allowance available (subject to company policy)
  • Opportunity to earn an annual bonus based on performance and company policy (subject to company policy)
  • Salary starting from ¥180,000 (depending on placement and subject to company policy)

Requirements for the Civil Construction Program

  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • At least a high school (SMA/SMK) graduate or equivalent.
  • Hold a JLPT N4
  • Hold an SSW Civil Construction certificate
  • Physically and mentally healthy (no infectious diseases or serious health conditions).
  • No criminal record.

The civil construction industry in Japan is the backbone of the economy and public safety. Because Japan frequently experiences natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons, there is a constant demand for skilled construction workers to build earthquake-resistant structures, repair damaged infrastructure, and support urban development projects.

Construction work is highly respected in Japan for its direct contribution to society and safety. Construction sites in Japan are known for their cleanliness, strict safety protocols, advanced technology, and professionalism. Workers are well trained and provided with proper protective equipment, creating a safe and efficient working environment.

Our Service

At Nakamura Study Japan, we provide full support for individuals who wish to build a career in civil construction in Japan. We partner with trusted construction companies that are officially registered and recognized by the Japanese government, ensuring that each participant's job placement is always legal and safe.

Participants in our construction program will go through document screening and an initial interview with Nakamura Study Japan. Once they pass, they will proceed to the next interview stage with our partner companies in Japan. Successful candidates will receive a job offer letter before beginning their preparatory training.

Our training program equips participants with the Japanese language ability and civil construction skills required. The program includes:

  • Japanese language classes up to the JFT-Basic A2 or JLPT N4 level.
  • Construction skills preparation to pass the official SSW civil construction exam, including basic safety, material handling, reading technical drawings, and other work skills.

After completing the training and passing all required exams, participants will make their departure preparations. We assist with the job matching process, visa application, and pre-departure orientation.

Upon arrival in Japan, our partner companies and local support networks will guide and assist participants so they can adapt well both in the workplace and in daily life in Japan.

What is the Tokutei Ginou (SSW) Visa?

Because the shortage of local civil construction workers has become a serious problem in Japan, the Japanese government has opened opportunities for foreign workers through the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa program. This visa allows international construction workers to work legally in Japan for up to five years, with the same rights, salary, and benefits as Japanese staff. There are 2 types of SSW visa: SSW 1 is a work visa for foreign workers with basic skills that allows them to work in Japan for a maximum of 5 years, but does not yet allow them to bring their family. SSW 2 is an advanced level with higher skills, a period of stay that can be extended indefinitely as long as the requirements are met, the ability to bring a spouse and children, and better prospects for long-term settlement in Japan.
