Tokutei Ginou Is Getting Competitive: Why the Language-School Route Wins

Tokutei Ginou Is Getting Competitive: Why the Language-School Route Wins

More and more people are applying for Tokutei Ginou (SSW), and many of them already hold JLPT N2 and already live in Japan. If you apply from Indonesia with N4, you compete with them head to head. That is why the language-school route in Japan is the best choice for staying competitive. Here is why, and what you can do starting today.

Tokutei Ginou Competition Looks Different Now

Tokutei Ginou is better known than before. Vacancy information circulates widely, so applicants are more numerous and more varied. Among those applying for a single position there are two broad groups:

  • Applicants already in Japan. They came through a language school, are used to living there, and many already hold N2, even N1.
  • Applicants from Indonesia. They studied in Indonesia, hold N4 or JFT-Basic as the minimum, and interview from afar.

Both meet the requirements. But in a company's eyes, the starting point is not the same.

N4 Is the Minimum, Not an Advantage

N4 opens the door to apply. It does not automatically get you chosen. Picture a company with one position and two applications. One is N4 and still in Indonesia. The other is N2, already in Japan, and able to come to an interview this week.

Companies need people who grasp instructions quickly, can talk with colleagues and customers, and can start work without a long wait. So it is natural that many companies tend to choose the applicant with stronger Japanese who is already there. This is not about who is smarter. It is about who is already closer to what the company needs.

Four Advantages of Applicants Already in Japan

  • Their Japanese improves every day. They use it at school, in shops and at work. Their level can keep rising to N3, N2 and beyond.
  • Face-to-face interviews. Companies can meet them in person and judge their attitude. They can also show up whenever they are called.
  • They already have experience. Language-school students may work part-time (arubaito) up to 28 hours a week. That is real work experience for your Rirekisho (the Japanese-style CV).
  • A status change without going home. If accepted, the visa status changes from student to Tokutei Ginou in Japan itself.

So the Language-School Route Is the Best Choice

The language-school route puts you in the same position as those applicants. You study in Japan, raise your level, work arubaito, then take exams and interviews right from there. You are no longer competing from far away. You are competing from the same place.

There is one more advantage. From a language school you can also continue to a vocational school (senmon gakko) or university, then work on another work visa that matches your major. Your career has more doors. The full reasons are in our article "Work in Japan via a Language School: 7 Reasons It Pays Off".

N4 lets you apply. A higher level and being in Japan get you chosen.

What If You Choose to Go from Indonesia?

The Indonesia route is still a good choice, especially if the upfront funds are not ready or you want to stay close to family first. To stay competitive:

  • Don't stop at N4. Keep climbing to N3. The higher your level, the stronger your application.
  • Practise speaking and interviews from the start. Companies judge how you introduce yourself, not only your certificate.
  • Prepare a neat Rirekisho. Describe your work experience and why you chose the field.
  • Start early. Preparing from Indonesia takes time, so the sooner you start the better.

What Can You Do Now?

  • Check your level. Take the Japanese level test in Nihongo Journey to see where you stand.
  • Choose your route. A language school in Japan or preparation from Indonesia, whichever fits your budget and goal.
  • Start from the basics. No N5 yet? Begin now, one level at a time.
