What Is the JLPT? A Complete Guide to the Japanese Language Proficiency Test
The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) is the official test for evaluating Japanese language skills of non-native speakers. It is administered by the Japan Foundation and JEES, and is recognized internationally by educational institutions, employers, and immigration authorities.
The JLPT consists of five levels, from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). It measures proficiency across three main areas:
Vocabulary and Kanji
Grammar and Reading Comprehension
Listening Skills
The test is held twice a year (July and December), including in many cities outside Japan such as in Indonesia.
JLPT Levels Explained: From N5 to N1
N5 – Beginner Level
Understands basic hiragana, katakana, and a small set of kanji
Can comprehend simple daily expressions and conversations
Suitable for complete beginners
Example skills: introducing yourself, asking for directions, reading simple menus
N4 – Upper Beginner Level
Knows around 300 kanji and 1,500 vocabulary words
Understands basic conversations spoken at near-normal speed
Ideal for language school admission or entry-level work programs (e.g., SSW)
Example skills: writing simple emails, reading public notices
N3 – Intermediate (Transitional) Level
Understands more complex sentence structures in written and spoken Japanese
Covers around 650 kanji and 3,750 vocabulary words
Acts as a transition level for work or further studies
Example skills: following workplace instructions, joining light discussions
N2 – Upper Intermediate Level
Understands news articles, business documents, and workplace discussions
Covers over 1,000 kanji and approximately 6,000 vocabulary words
Commonly required for professional jobs in Japan
Example skills: reading company reports, attending formal interviews
N1 – Advanced Level
Comparable to native-level academic proficiency
Understands nuances in literature, debates, and legal or academic texts
Often required for specialized professions such as researchers, professors, journalists, or to enter national universities
Example skills: writing academic essays, understanding advanced news broadcasts
Which JLPT Level Should You Aim For?
It depends on your goal in Japan:
Planning to attend a Japanese language school? → N5 or N4 is sufficient
Planning to enroll in a university (Bachelor’s or Diploma)? → At least N2, preferably N1
Planning to work in Japan?
For SSW (Specified Skilled Worker) programs: Minimum N4
For professional jobs (e.g., engineers, office work): Usually N2 or higher
Pursuing graduate studies (Master’s/PhD) or research? → N1 is highly recommended
Why the JLPT Matters
Having a JLPT certificate does more than just prove your Japanese ability — it is often a requirement for visa applications, school admissions, and job recruitment in Japan. Higher levels of JLPT open up more opportunities and demonstrate your readiness to live and work in a Japanese-speaking environment.
