The term system in Japanese language schools divides the academic year into several study periods (terms), usually lasting 3-4 months each. Each term focuses on specific material and ends with evaluations or exams. This system helps students learn in a structured way, track their progress, and allows curriculum adjustments based on their needs.
If you're planning to study Japanese in Japan, it's important to understand how the term system works in language schools. In general, there are four intakes per year, giving you flexibility to choose the best time to start your study journey.
When Are the School Terms in Japan?
Most Japanese language schools offer four start dates:
* January
* April
* July
* October
Each term typically lasts around 3 months. However, not all schools accept students in every term. It's best to consult with our team to confirm the available schedules for your preferred school.
Study Options: Short-Term or Long-Term
* If you want to study for more than 3 months, you’ll need a student visa. The maximum duration is 2 years.
* If you’re planning a short course (1–3 months), you might be able to study on a tourist visa, depending on your nationality and immigration rules.
April is the most recommended intake if you plan to complete a full 2-year curriculum, as many schools restart their program in April.
Which Term Is Right for You?
* January: Great for students who already have basic Japanese and aim to take the JLPT in July or December.
* April: Ideal for those who want to complete a full two-year program or continue to university or vocational school.
* July: Best for students planning to take the EJU exam (for Japanese university admissions) in November.
* October: A good option for recent high school graduates from Northern Hemisphere countries, especially after their summer break.
When Should You Apply?
To allow enough time for visa and document processing, we recommend applying 9–12 months in advance. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of securing a spot.
What Can You Experience in Each Season in Japan?
* January – March: Winter and New Year celebrations
* April – June: Spring and cherry blossoms
* July – September: Summer festivals and fireworks
* October – December: Beautiful autumn leaves and seasonal food
