What is it like to study and work in Japan? What career opportunities are available for young Indonesians? These are the key questions discussed in the workshop 'Job Opportunities in Japan' that we held in collaboration with BINUS Square on May 7, 2025.
This event took place at the Oak Room and was attended by enthusiastic BINUS boarders eager to learn more about studying and building a career in Japan. Inspired by Real Experiences
The keynote speaker for this workshop was Katherine Callista, Education Coordinator of Nakamura Study Japan, who currently lives and works in Tokyo. She is a recipient of a Japanese government scholarship and has extensive experience assisting Indonesian students who wish to study or work in Japan.
Fluent in Japanese, English, and Indonesian, Katherine delivered her presentation in a clear, enthusiastic, and easy-to-understand manner.
Participants gained firsthand insight into life in Japanâdirectly from someone who has lived it.
Popular Job Fields in Japan
One of the main points discussed was the high demand for foreign workers in Japan, especially in the following sectors:
Caregiving / Elderly Nursing
Engineering and Manufacturing
IT Engineers and Programmers
Hospitality (hotels & restaurants)
Foreign Language Teaching
Salaries offered vary, ranging from „180,000 to over „500,000 per month, depending on the job field and qualifications.
Requirements and Legal Pathways to Work in Japan
To legally work in Japan, participants received complete information on the various types of Japanese work visas, including:
Specified Skilled Worker (SSW)
Technical Intern Training Program
Engineer / Specialist in Humanities
Highly Skilled Professional Visa
Katherine also emphasized the importance of taking and passing the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), which is a key requirement for studying, interning, or working in Japan. The JLPT has five levels (N5 to N1) and is held twice a year, including in Indonesia. A Fun and Interactive Workshop Atmosphere
The event was not only informative but also interactive! Participants joined quizzes with prizes, took part in a Japanese-style personality test, and had a live Q&A session covering topics such as internships, scholarships, living costs, and adapting to Japanese culture.
Every participant received concrete steps to start their journey to Japanâfrom learning the language, choosing a study or internship program, to securing a work contract and visa.
Why Japan?
Japan is one of the countries with a growing need for foreign workers, particularly due to its aging population. The Japanese government has opened many legal pathways for skilled foreign workers with language proficiency. This presents a great opportunity for young Indonesian talent to build a global career.
